Know What You’re Singing

I depend on Pandora to get me through my studies (LOL). While working on a paper (due tomorrow, yikes!) I’m listening to Pandora and a song by Jill Scott is playing. Many people like Jill because of her neo-soul style and lyrics. Her song “Long Walk” was (and still is) very popular! Sometimes we sit and sing the words to these songs without even knowing what we are saying…

There is a line in the song that says, “maybe we can think about Revelation 3:17.” I thought to myself, what does that scripture say? So, I looked it up!

Revelation 3:17
“Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked…”

Now, why would Jill quote this scripture in her song? Did she even know the scripture exists? Does it have anything to do with taking a long walk around the park after dark?

The scripture is talking about humility, which is wonderful. We should always depend on the Lord and not our own understanding (Proverbs 3).

I just want to encourage you to know what you’re listening to/singing. Music is a wonderful outlet and way to express yourself. Listen wisely!
